The Summer Palace (Pinyin;Yíhé Yuán) is located within the Haidian District, northwest of Beijing. It is the best preserved imperial garden in the world and the largest of its kind that still in existence in China today. It is acclaimed as a museum of gardens in China, for a visit to this garden bestow on sightseers a glimpse of representative scenes all over China.

It is mainly composed of the Longevity Hill and the Kunming Lake. The huge garden boasts about 3,000 garden architecture and is broken into three zones: office zone, living quarters and sightseeing area. The Longevity Hill covers one fourth of the total area while the Kunming Lake covers the rest three quarters. The beautiful former imperial garden is set off by a multitude of highly decorated buildings, halls, pavilions, bridges, towers, pagodas, isles, and courtyards.

Besides the main sites, there are also other sites make Summer Palace a comprehensive garden and worth to visit, which including East Palace Gate, Hall of Benevolence and Longevity, Hall of Jade Ripples, Garden of Virtue and Harmony, Hall of Joyful Longevity in court area; Longevity Hill, Long Corridor, Hall of Dispelling Clouds, Tower of Buddhist Incense, Hall of the Sea of Wisdom, Back Lake, Suzhou Market Street, Garden of Harmonious Interests in Longevity Hill Area; and Bronze Ox, Seventeen-Arch Bridge, Nanhu Island, Marble Boat in Kunming Lake Area.

The Summer Palace is a monument to classical Chinese architecture, in terms of both garden design and construction. Borrowing scenes from surrounding landscapes, it radiates not only the grandeur of an imperial garden but also the beauty of nature in seamless combination that best illustrates the guiding principle of traditional Chinese garden design: “The works of men should match the works of Heaven”.
