Tian An Men Square

Being the front gate of Forbidden City, the construction of Tiananmen was started in 1417 and completed in 1420 in Ming dynasty. At that time, the name of the gate was Chengtianmen, which means “a Gate under the Order of Heaven”. Being a 3-floored wooden gate, it was not as grand as today’s Tiananmen. Chengtianmen was destroyed in a fire in 1451 and was restored in 1465. Then, at the end of Ming dynasty, it was breached in the war and to 1651 in Qing dynasty, the gate was restored. The scale of the restored gate in Qing dynasty was very similar to today’s Tiananmen and the gate got the name of Tiananmen at that time.
On 01, Oct, 1949, Chairman Mao Zedong declared the establishment of People’s Republic of China on Tiananmen. After that, the gate of Tiananmen became a holy spot in Chinese people’s mind. As a political symbolization of Peoples Republic of China, the Tiananmen was designed a part of Chinese national emblem.
Tiananmen Square is the largest public square in the world, named after the Tiananmen (literally, Gate of Heavenly Peace) which sits to its north, separating it from the Forbidden City.
The square is 880 metres south to north and 500 metres east to west, a total area of 440,000 square meters, which makes it the largest open-urban square in the world – considerably larger than Naghsh-i Jahan Square in Isfahan, Iran, its closest competitor. The floor was paved with light-colored granite pieces. The daily national flag rising ceremony is the most ceremonious time on Tiananmen Square.
The Monument to the Peoples Heroes, Chairman Maos Mausoleum, the National Congress House of the Great Hall of People, and the National Museum, all are surrounding the square, and it is always gathering local and visitors alike.
