Lhasa, also La-sa, is the capital of the autonomous region of Tibet. It is located in southeastern Tibet in the Himalayas. The city is situated near the Lhasa River in a fertile plain almost 3660 m (almost 12,010 ft) above sea level. Being the chief commercial center of Tibet, Lhasa is linked by highway with major cities of neighboring provinces. Manufactures include food products, textiles, electrical equipment, and carpets. The city has grown rapidly since the 1960s, and the majority of the population is now Chinese. The citys most famous landmark is the Potala, an enormous palace built on a ridge overlooking the northern part of the city. It is the former residence of the Dalai Lama, who was the spiritual and temporal leader of Tibet. Lhasa is the chief Tibetan trade center, connected by road with the Chinese provinces of Qinghai, Sichuan, and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, and with India, Kashmir, and Nepal. Chemicals, motors, and wool and leather products are manufactured. Lhasa is on a tributary of the Yarlung Zangbo (Brahmaputra) at an altitude of c.11, 800 ft (3,600 m). The city is one of worlds highest cities, situates on the north bank of Lhasa River. It is the heart and soul of Tibet, home to the highlights of its wonders and heritages. Lhasa lies in the Tibet autonomous region. It is 29, 000 sq km with a population is 367 thousand. The northern part of Lhasa is higher than the southern part. The middle southern part is the plain, the topography there is very even. There are so many animals and some kinds of fish in Lhasa. The mineral resources are very abundant. There is copper, iron, Au, granite, marble and plaster, etc. Agriculture here is very important. Mainly, there is wheat, highland barley, tomatoes, cucumber and so on. In the animal husbandry, cow bleeding is in the first place. Lhasa is famous for its agricultural machine, power, leather, food and motorcar reparation and concrete. Lhasa is called the City of Sun, because of its excellent sunshine at an altitude of 3607 meters. It is the plateau monsoon climate in the temperate zone. It has an average annual temperature of 7.5Co, and an average annual precipitation of 454 mm. Lhasa is situated close to the border of Nepal and China, on the northern flanks of the Himalayas and 3,600 meters from the banks of the Lhasa River. This area is fairly inaccessible for tourists between December and January due to the heavy snowfall and poor weather conditions. August is the rainy season here when landslides are common. The hottest month here is June, with high temperatures of 22Co. The sun here can be very strong too, so make sure you take plenty of sun block and a hat to protect from the harsh rays. The coldest time here is January when temperatures can drop to minus 10Co.
