Lijiang

This is an ancient, picturesque land. This is a land everyone admires. "Lijiang is rarely known to the outside world. It is the ancient Naxi Kingdom in south China which is almost forgotten..." Peter Ku, a Russian who had lived in Lijiang for over 9 years, described Lijiang in his book 'the forgotten kindom'. The beauty of Lijiang lies within its natural landscape and friendly people. Located in the northwest Yunnan Province with a population of 1.14 million people, the city is geographically remote which allows for a significant amount of undisturbed landscape, fresh air, breathtaking mountains, and clear streams. Some of the area's unique attractions include the beautiful landscapes of Yak Meadow, Tiger Leaping Gorge, and Black Dragon Pool, as well as rich cultural spots like the Stone Drum Town, Lijiang Ancient City, and the Murals as Baisha Village.
History traces the city of Lijiang back to the Warring States Period (476 BC -221 BC) but it came into more economical prosperity during the Tang Dynasty (618-907) when the Ancient Tea-Horse Road was used.
Nature the Great Creator showed extreme affection in his ancient piece of land. Apart from its abundant land, biological and mineral resources, Lijiang has huge reserve of tourism and hydropower resources. In Lijiang, there is the contemporary glacier which is the southernmost one on the north hemisphere. The Yulong (Jade Dragon) Snow Mountain is praised as the "Museum of Glaciers" and the "Kingdom of Plants". The ancient Dayan Town of Lijiang has a history of over 800 years. The Town is well-known to the world because "each of the household is built by the stream and surrounded by willow trees". Therefore, Dayan Town is praised as the "Oriental Venice" and "Suzhou on the Plateau". It was listed in 1997 as a cultural heritage site by UNESCO World Cultural Heritages. Dongba sculptures of Lijiang were written in pictographs which are the only living written language of its kind in the world. Baisha Murals in Baisha village have been listed for national-level protection of historic relics. The "Dongjing Music of the Naxi" bearing the melody and rhythm inherited from the Tang and Song Dynasties is known as the "Living Fossils of Music"... The natural and humanistic scenes of Lijiang have drawn many keen-sighted personages.
A visit to this unique city will allow visitors to interact with the local inhabitants, known as the Naxi Group, a minority ethnic group in China. Their long and rich history here has established the Dongba Culture, drawing from both the Tibetan and the Central Plains Culture. Souvenirs and handicrafts specific to the Dongba Culture can be found all over the city. The most popular and graphically identifiable is the painted or carved Dongba hieroglyphs.
Lijiang of today is no longer the "forgotten realm". If you desire breathtaking local landscapes, unique traditions of ethnic minorities, and the feel of ancient towns, a visit to Lijiang will certainly not disappoint any traveler. The high altitude of the city also provides and abundant amount of sunshine, ideal for anyone taking in the natural surroundings, furthermore, the warm-hearted and hospitable Lijiang people of different ethnic nationalities cordially welcome friends from both home and abroad.
