The world-renowned Shanghai Museum, a museum of ancient Chinese art was founded in 1952. Opened on October 12, 1996, the Shanghai Museum is an ultra-modern repository for 5,000 years of history and tradition; its striking design by Xing Tonghe invokes the shape of a bronze ding tripod. With a collection of over 120,000 pieces of cultural relics in twelve categories, the Museum's bronze, ceramic, painting and calligraphy collections are among the finest in the world, and the range of its collections displayed in 14 state-of-the-art galleries is unparalleled.

The new Shanghai Museum has set up ten special galleries of bronze, calligraphy, ceramics, furniture, jades, minority art, numismatics, paintings, sculptures, and seals, together with a special gallery of donated relics and three temporary exhibition halls.

The Shanghai Museum also does scientific research which has made great achievements. Important research covers the pottery, the application of bromine methane in protecting cultural relics and so on. The museum also compiled such picture books as Pottery and Porcelain Collection, the Painting Collection, Bronze ware Collection and so on.
