Yu Garden
Yu Garden, built 400 years ago, is a famous ancient private garden in the south of Yangtze River with architectures of Ming and Qing dynasties.
Over the years, the gardens fell into disrepair until about 1760 when bought by merchants, then suffered extensive damage in the 19th century. In 1842, during the Opium Wars, the British army occupied the Town God Temple for five days. During the Taiping Rebellion the gardens were occupied by imperial troops, and damaged again by the Japanese in 1942. They were repaired by the Shanghai government from 1956-1961, opened to the public in 1961, and declared a national monument in 1982.
Though small in area, it seems far larger when one walks around it owing to its ingenious design, zigzag layout of pavilions, chambers and towers, opera stage, elegant rocks and different style of bridges on the mirroring lakes and moats. There are more than 30 scenic spots in the garden, each different from the other and unique in its own. The courtyard walls are decorated with different shape of brick windows and many huge brick dragons curving on the top of walls. The vividly carved brick figures of warlords & warriors, unique animals, brick birds and cranes are standing on the roofs of many ancient chambers and the top of the pavilions. Those made it to real a museum of Chinese ancient architectures and elegant garden designs.
Today Yu Garden occupies an area of 2 hectares (5 acres), and is divided into six general areas laid out in the Suzhou style.
